Cologne Phonetic Name Encoder

Produce Kölner Phonetik digit keys optimized for German names, including umlaut and Eszett preprocessing.

Ready. Your working data stays in this browser.

Why this tool is useful

Use Cologne Phonetic when German pronunciation rules and names containing Ä, Ö, Ü or ß make an English Soundex key inappropriate.

How it works

The browser uppercases with German-aware substitutions, maps letters by their neighbouring context, collapses consecutive codes and removes zeroes except when zero begins the key.

Practical example

Müller-Lüdenscheidt becomes 65752682 after umlaut folding, contextual digit mapping, duplicate collapse and internal-vowel removal.

Validation

The calculation is deterministic and explains validation errors instead of silently changing invalid input.

Privacy boundary

Input and output remain in this tab. Copy and download happen through browser APIs without a server upload.

Result passport

Every run reports its tool mode, timestamp and input/output size so transformed data can be audited.
